Court directs acid attack convict to read works of Gandhi, eat vegetarian food

Karaikal additional sessions judge N Vaithiyanathan on Tuesday directed a youth sentenced to life term for murdering a software engineer to read the works of Mahatma Gandhiand Arutprakasa Vallalar during his tenure in the prison. In addition, the judge directed him to practise yoga and meditation.

The judge made the observation while pointing out a recent research finding that revealed yoga could improve mood and mental well-being among the prisoners and affect the impulse behaviour. He directed the jail authorities to provide vegetarian food for R Suresh alias Appu who threw acid on J Vinodhini in November last year. She succumbed to the burn injuries on February 12 after undergoing treatments at various hospitals in Puducherry and Chennai.

"Imbalanced secretion of the hormones such as serotonin and melatonin and less production of neuropeptide, a chemical substance in the brain and stress caused by the energy blockages in the frontal lobe of the brain are the main physiological causes of his misbehaviour," he said.

Strongly condemning the dastardly act of the youth, the judge warned that if the attitude of 'such roadside Romeos is allowed to grow, the same will increase their tribe.'

"Ultimately they will prove to be not only a menace but also a cancerous growth to the society, especially against the young members of the weaker sex," he said.
