Jaya, an inspiration to young minds



Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was all set to take part and deliver the graduation day special address at the 155th convocation of the University of Madras, one of the reputed and oldest higher education institutions in the country, here today 
Jayalalithaa is the chief guest of the high profile event, which will be presided over by Tamilnadu Governor K Rosaiah. The convocation will take place at the centenary hall of the varsity. Apart from the 155th convocation, the event will also witness the supplementary convocation for the years 2011 and 2012.
A stone arch along the Kamarajar Salai opposite the MGR Memorial on the beach front will also be inaugurated by the Chief Minister to commemorate the occasion.
The stone arch, which derives inspiration from the Gothic style of architecture, has been crafted exclusively by sculptors and artisans from Mamallapuram, said reports.
The convocation will have the participation of Higher Education Minister and Pro-Chancellor of the university Palaniappan, Higher Education Secretary Apoorva Varma, Vice-Chancellor of University of Madras R Thandavan, Registrar Koteeswara Prasad and senate members, apart from a large number of students and parents.
As part of the event, Jayalalithaa will culminate the tree plantation drive taken up by NSS students, by planting the last sapling. As part of the initiative, the students planted 2.50 lakh saplings in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts.
It is to be noted that the government led by Jayalalithaa has been giving paramount importance to the growth of higher education.
In April this year, the Chief Minister announced setting up of 12 new arts and engineering colleges in Tamilnadu from this year. She also announced infrastructure facilities worth Rs 150 crore for institutions coming under the Anna University in various parts of the State.
Also, her government merged five Anna Technical Universities, which were functioning without any facilities, with the Anna University-Chennai and brought all engineering colleges in Tamilnadu under its (Anna University-Chennai) control.
